New look, same skin loving science

New look, same skin loving science

We are so excited to share that Aesthetics Rx® is transitioning to beautiful new, sustainable packaging as outlined in the Aesthetics Rx® Waste Reduction initiatives, commencing in July — a step forward for our brand; one that reflects our ongoing commitment to the environment and elevates our customers’ experience. Ten years into our journey felt like the perfect moment to evolve our visual identity — honouring how far we’ve come while setting the stage for an exciting new chapter.

We’ve designed this transition with care, aiming to surpass customer expectations. We’ve reengineered our skincare packaging to elevate every aspect of how our brand looks and feels — without changing the science-backed formulations our loyal customers know and trust.

Our goal was to create a completely bespoke, elegant new look that breaks away from the conventional, clinical aesthetic typically associated with cosmeceutical brands. We believe high-performance skincare should look as exceptional as it performs — both on the retail shelf and in our customer’s bathroom. Importantly, our new packaging is also more sustainable, aligning with our commitment to sustainability while continuing to offer the same high-performance products.

Phasing-in: Why This Matters - A Sustainable Transition

This will be a phased rollout rather than a full-scale relaunch — this is because our formulations remain unchanged, it is simply the exterior that looks different. Products in the new packaging will be introduced product by product, as our warehouse gradually depletes existing stock.

Rather than writing off current finished goods or retrieving stock from your shelves — which would contribute to unnecessary waste and landfill — we are managing this transition in a way that:

• Avoids stock destruction,

• Minimises heavy discounting that could impact future sales and revenue,

• Maintains a clean and premium brand presence on your shelves, and

• Ensures customers receive the same trusted formulations in new, improved packaging.

Importantly, the A Rx® formulations have not changed. What’s inside our new bottles and jars is still the same high-performance skincare your customers know and love.

Aesthetics Rx® Waste Reduction Initiatives

Reducing waste is a significant challenge in the beauty industry. Aesthetics Rx® is committed to minimising the environmental impact of our packaging and are actively taking steps to shrink our footprint.

To achieve this, we have reduced the size, number of components, and previous use of non-recyclable materials in our packaging. Most of our packaging is now recyclable through standard kerbside programs in Australia while some glass components require specialised recycling processes^. We also recommend considering our suggestions for re-using our components made from toughened glass.

The packaging materials we use are in line with the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) sustainable packaging guidelines. APCO is a not-for-profit organisation leading the development of a circular economy for packaging in Australia.

Recycling is a vital part of sustainable waste management — but for it to be truly effective, it’s essential to do it right. Check your local council’s website for recycling guidelines and sort materials carefully, to help drive the circular economy forward.

Aesthetics Rx® is committed to the Wesfarmers Health Sustainable Packaging Policy to minimise waste, conserve resources, and contribute to a healthier planet with our new packaging.

You’ll notice Aesthetics Rx® packaging now includes ARL icons. This takes the guesswork out of recycling, providing easy-to-understand on-pack instructions.

Our tiered system guides you on how to dispose of empty products.

A Rx® products fall into one of three categories:

Recyclable

Recycle the entire product.

Conditionally Recyclable

Partial recycling: some components go in the bin and/or some parts require additional steps. Example of additional steps can include, flatten to recycle, scrunch into ball to recycle, check locally and separate to recycle i.e. remove lid.

Not Recyclable

Dispose of in general waste.

We are taking the guess work out of recycling.

Our retail products have the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) instructions printed on their label and every product has been Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal (PREP) assessed.

Reduce: Simplifying for Sustainability

A key objective of our recent rebrand was to cut down on unnecessary packaging components. Previously, our airless pumps contained up to six non-recyclable parts — we have now transitioned to bottles and jars with fewer, fully recyclable components. While we recognise the convenience of our old packaging, this change ensures our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint is both measurable and meaningful.

Re-use: Giving Packaging a Second Life

We’ve introduced durable glass jars and bottles designed not only for sustainability but for reusability too. Glass is a superior packaging material for skincare because it’s non-reactive, impermeable, and offers excellent protection against air, light, and moisture, ensuring product stability and extending shelf life naturally. To enhance longevity and safety, we’ve chosen toughened glass that resists breakage. Once your product is finished, simply wash the packaging with warm, soapy water and let it air dry.

Here are some creative ways to repurpose our packaging:

Jars:

  • Spice and herb storage
  • Small pantry essentials
  • Hair ties and clips
  • Bathroom items like cotton rounds
  • Pins and sewing accessories
  • Small jewellery pieces like earrings and rings
  • Paperclips

Spray bottles:

  • Water mister for indoor plants
  • DIY room spray (combine water with your favourite essential oils)
  • Refreshing face or body mist

Reusing packaging helps extend its life — one small step that makes a big difference for the planet.

Store Packaging Recovery Pilot Program

We are piloting a Store Packaging Recovery Program, working with two glass recyclers, ResourceCo SA and Repurporse IT VIC. The glass packaging in our range is designed for reusability, but where not practical please use our Store Packaging Recovery Program to ensure the correct recycling method is used. We are working on a procedure for our retail network to receive around our glass for recycling. We will communicate a Standard Operating Procedure shortly to help facilitate the program at your location.

FAQ's:

Why did Aesthetics Rx® change packaging?

Reaching the ten-year mark of our brand journey gave us a natural opportunity to reflect, refresh, and reimagine how our brand shows up in the world—ensuring our visual identity evolves with the same ambition and confidence that drives our formulations.

Aesthetics Rx® is committed to minimising the environmental impact of our packaging and are actively taking steps to shrink our footprint. We are still refining and perfecting our range with every packaging production run, making the brand amongst the best in class in Australia.

Why did you switch from airless pumps to dropper bottles for your serums and some moisturisers?

While our previous airless pumps were convenient, they came with a hidden cost — sustainability. Each pump pack contained multiple non-recyclable components, making them wasteful and difficult to dispose of responsibly. Our new dropper bottles are functional, luxurious, and contain a recyclable element – the glass bottle. This aligns with our commitment to reducing unnecessary waste and APCO sustainable packaging guidelines.

Are dropper bottles as effective at keeping the product fresh?

Yes! Our dropper bottles are designed to protect the integrity of your serum. While airless pumps minimised exposure to air, dropper bottles still maintain product quality — plus, they allow better control over how much you use, reducing product waste. Rigorous stability tests have been performed by a third-party specialist on our new packaging for your peace of mind. Glass is a superior packaging material for skincare because it’s non-reactive, impermeable, and offers excellent protection against air, light, and moisture—ensuring product stability and extending shelf life naturally.

How should I use the new dropper bottle for the best results?

To get the perfect amount of serum every time, follow these simple steps:

  • Unscrew the lid, squeezing any serum inside the pipette into the bottle before removing the pipette from the bottle. The pipette should now be empty.
  • Squeeze the air out first: Before placing the dropper into the bottle, squeeze the rubber top to expel any air from the pipette.
  • Insert the dropper: While still holding the rubber top, place the dropper into the bottle.
  • Release the squeeze: Let go of the rubber top while the dropper is submerged in the serum. This creates a vacuum effect, drawing the serum up into the pipette.
  • Dispense with control: Lift the dropper out and gently squeeze the top again to release the desired amount of serum into your fingertips.

What should I do with the bottle when I’ve finished my serum?

Whilst the dropper needs to be placed in the general waste bin (due to size and materials), the glass bottle can be recycled as part of our Return to Store Recycling Program. Simply rinse the bottle with warm, soapy water, let it dry, and follow the steps to return. The glass will be repurposed, cutting down the need for new raw materials.

Why didn’t Aesthetics Rx® use refillable packaging instead?

We are exploring refill options for the future and various other recyclable materials! For now, our priority was to remove non-recyclable parts from our packaging as quickly and seamlessly as we could, ensuring every component has a more sustainable end-of-life pathway. Please watch this space, our evolution is continuous. Hint: it's only a spray away!

Why did you switch from Acrylic/PETG/Opaque PET jars and bottles to glass jars for your moisturisers?

Beauty packaging made with Acrylic/PETG/Opaque PET is very common in the Australian beauty industry because these containers are lightweight and practical. Unfortunately, these packaging materials are not recyclable in Australia's kerbside recycling system and are listed in APCO’s problematic packaging action plan. Our old acrylic jars and bottles were lightweight and practical — but from a sustainability perspective, they were not ideal. Acrylic is difficult to recycle and often ends up in landfill. Our new glass jars are a superior alternative: they’re durable, reusable, and can be returned to our stores and recycled in our pilot Store Recovery Program, and we’ve given a luxurious feel to our new design. Glass is a superior packaging material for skincare because it’s non-reactive, impermeable, and offers excellent protection against air, light, and moisture — ensuring product stability, and extending shelf life naturally.

Isn’t glass more fragile?

Our jars are made from toughened glass, designed to handle everyday use. We tested them ourselves; they’re sturdy, safe, and will not shatter if accidentally dropped.

How should I apply the product from the jar?

To keep your moisturiser fresh, we recommend using the included spatula rather than your fingers. This helps prevent contamination and ensures your product stays clean and effective from the first scoop to the last. If you happen to misplace your spatula, just let us know; we will send you a new one!

Can I reuse the jars once I’ve finished my moisturiser?

Definitely! After cleaning them with warm, soapy water and letting them dry naturally, you can repurpose the jars for:

  • Storing small pantry items like spices or herbs
  • Holding hair ties, bobby pins, or cotton rounds
  • Organising jewellery like rings and earrings
  • Keeping desk bits like paperclips or pushpins tidy

What if I don’t want to reuse them?

No problem — you can pop the 50ml jar lid* into your kerbside recycling bin once you have finished the product and washed the packaging. Due to their size, all jar seals and 20ml lids must be disposed of in general waste. The glass can be recycled using our Return to Store Recycling Program. The glass will be given a second life in a new form, reducing the need for using new raw materials.

What about when I want to take my products with me, but don’t want to take the new glass packaging?

What is the ARL and why is it important?

ARL stands for Australasian Recycling Label. The purpose of the ARL is to take the confusion out of recycling and provide consumers with easy-to-understand information on how to recycle their packaging. It reduces contamination in recycling streams and increases recycling rates. It’s evidence-based and trusted, backed by the Packaging Evaluation Portal (PREP).

Why are there are so many different ARLs on Aesthetics Rx® products?

Because we have such a diverse line-up of amazing products! We have worked with our suppliers to really understand and carefully select every single material and component of our packaging. Throughout the product development stage, we made changes to certain products like removing the metal spring from most of our pumps to ensure both the bottle and pump could be recycled kerbside without compromising on quality.

It also comes down to location. More broadly, Australia has different recycling guidelines compared to New Zealand. This can also vary across local councils.

Why are some of the recycling labels different in New Zealand versus Australia?

From 1 February 2024, New Zealand implemented the NZ Kerbside implementation guide for the ARL program supported by the Standard materials for kerbside collections publication. These documents outlined changes to standard materials accepted in kerbside recycling and are your best resources for the most up to date information regarding the ARL Program in New Zealand. If you have any further queries, it is best to contact your local district or city council.

How do I correctly recycle or dispose of my empty products?

We’ve made this easy for you! All Aesthetics Rx® primary and secondary packaging (jars/bottles/tubes/sachets and display box) feature ARLs. These symbols show you exactly which bin (recycling or general waste) to use. Don’t forget, rather than throwing out, our durable glass jars and bottles can also be repurposed.

Our tiered system helps you figure out what to do with the packaging once you’ve finished your Aesthetics Rx® product.

Firstly, after you've unboxed your product, flatten the box and pop it in the kerbside recycling bin. All Aesthetics Rx® display boxes are recyclable.

Your product will fall into one of the three categories below.

RECYCLABLE:

After you’ve finished your product, the entire empty product can go into the kerbside recycling bin. Keep the lid on. It's as easy as that!

CONDITIONALLY RECYCLABLE:

The empty product needs a little prep work before it can be placed in kerbside recycling. The ARL icons on the back will guide you.

NOT RECYCLABLE:

Once it's served its purpose, simply pop this product in your general waste bin.

Why is the Microbiome Balancing Mist spray bottle conditionally recyclable?

The spray nozzle contains a metal spring and unfortunately can't be recycled. We are working towards a metal free spring in the future. As the bottle is made from toughened glass, it is part of our Return to Store Recycling Program. We have a refillable pouch option coming soon. Stay tuned!

Why aren’t the sheet masks and sample sachets recyclable?

We’re yet to source a recyclable or reusable option for the sheet masks and sample sachets. This is due to the intricate manufacturing process and ensuring we don’t compromise the integrity of these beautiful products. There are too many different materials blended into this product, making it difficult for recycling facilities to separate them all.

Why is Lip Rx is conditionally recyclable?

We can’t wait for you to try our new lip product coming later this year. We’ve reformulated the Ultimate Lip Perfecter, and with a packaging glow-up and fresh name, we present you the conveniently sized, chic, everyday essential, Lip Rx. The 18g tube can be scrunched and placed in kerbside recycling, however, the Lip Rx cap is too small and lightweight to be sorted at the recycling depots therefore it needs to be placed in the rubish bin.

You’ve listed quite a few materials used across Aesthetics Rx® products. Tell me more about each type.

Across our broad product range, we’ve carefully selected materials that work seamlessly with our formulas and reduce packaging waste; to create products you’ll be excited to showcase on your skincare shelf.

Polypropylene (PP): A versatile thermoplastic polymer in the polyolefin family with excellent chemical resistance and high melting point. PP is commonly used in packaging for its toughness, flexibility, and heat resistance.

Polyethylene (PE): A widely used thermoplastic polymer in the polyolefin family with various forms, including high density polyethylene (HDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). PE is known for its strength, flexibility, and resistance to moisture and chemicals.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET): A thermoplastic polymer commonly used in packaging, particularly for bottles and containers. PET is lightweight, transparent, and has good barrier properties, making it suitable for beverages, food, and personal care products.

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): A thermoplastic polymer in the polyolefin family known for its high strength to density ratio. HDPE is used in packaging for various products, such as bottles, containers, and bags. It is recognised for its resistance to chemicals, moisture, and impact.

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE): A flexible, transparent thermoplastic polymer in the polyolefin family with low density. LDPE is used in packaging films, bags, and wraps due to its excellent moisture resistance and flexibility.

Glass: A transparent and brittle material made from silica and other additives. It is widely used in packaging due to its impermeability to gases and liquids, making it ideal for preserving food and beverages. It is often produced in a cylindrical shape (close to a spherical shape) which provides maximum durability and is easily manufactured

Aluminium: A lightweight and corrosion resistant metal used in packaging due to its excellent barrier properties, which protect products from moisture, light, and air. It is commonly used in the form of foils or cans in flexible packaging, rigid containers, seals, and closures.

Rubber: A natural or synthetic elastic material known for its resilience and flexibility. Rubber is used in packaging for applications such as seals, gaskets, or protective cushioning.

Paper: A versatile material made from cellulose fibres derived from wood pulp. It is used in various packaging applications, including boxes, bags, and labels.

Cardboard: A thick and stiff paper-based material typically made from layers of compressed and glued paper fibres. It is commonly used for packaging boxes and cartons due to its strength and versatility.

*At the time of writing.

^New Zealand operates under different/stricter kerbside collection guidelines compared to Australia. Refer to Standard materials for kerbside collections guidance document and NZ kerbside implementation guide for the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) program document to understand how to dispose of various materials in New Zealand.

**On the 50ml jar range, the ARLs on the jar and box specify the packaging must be disposed of in the bin. However, we have made some changes since production and the 50ml jar lids can now be placed in kerbside recycling in Australia (not applicable to New Zealand).
